African American in Gangster Movies

In American gangster movies, we can see that many gangsters are black people. The formation of this situation has a lot to do with people’s stereotypes.

In the early 20th century, there were only five stereotypes of black Americans and one of them was a “barbaric thug”. In Griffith’s film The Birth of a Nation, a barbaric black image was created. In the movie, black people like to cause trouble. The audience will conclude that their barbarism stems from the fact that they were once suppressed by whites. This is a vent. Because of this, one of the stereotypes that blacks give people is barbarism.

Because of the issue of social identity, black people are still unacceptable in the 20th century. Although slavery has been abolished, people have thought that their image is barbaric because of their looks and body. In the book The Invention of Race, scholars even regard blacks as transitional species between humans and gorillas. This statement is obviously to show that black people are barbaric.
